这种把“听懂”和“会说”混为一谈的错句;写邮件时又把make yourself understood用成make you understood。

  • I understand the instructions.(我看懂了说明书。)
  • She understood every word he said.(他说的每个字她都听懂了。)

  • I understand why you made that decision.(我理解你为什么会做那个决定。)
  • After working with him for a month, I finally understand how he thinks.(和他共事一个月后,我终于理解他的思维方式。)

1.2 和know、realize、see到底有什么不一样

比如I know his name,你知道他的名字;I know how to swim,你知道游泳的方法(通常也表示会游)。 你可以know the fact,却不一定understand the reason。

  • I realized I had left my keys at home.(我意识到把钥匙落家里了。)

Ask me if you don't see what I mean就是“如果没明白我的意思就问我”。

I can't figure out how to fix the printer,表示“我想不出怎么修打印机”。 I finally figured it out,但不常说I finally understood it(虽然语法上没错),因为前者更强调那个“费劲弄明白”的过程。

2. understand

2.1 understand +

  • You don't understand me at all.(你根本不懂我。)
  • She really understands children.(她真的很懂孩子。)

I don't understand the question、I can't understand his behavior,这些结构简单但极其实用。

  • I understand that the new policy takes effect next Monday.(我了解到新政策下周一生效。)

这里的I understand that...相当于I have heard that...或It is my understanding that...,是比较正式的表达。

接wh-疑问从句同样常见,understand后面可以跟why、what、how、where、when等引导的从句:

  • I don't understand why he got so angry.
  • Do you understand what I'm saying?
  • She couldn't understand how the machine worked at first.

I don't understand why he left写成I don't understand the reason. He left. I don't understand why he left,一句话就能表达清楚。

2.3 understand + doing:

  • I can't understand his leaving without saying goodbye.(我无法理解他不辞而别。)
  • We fully understand your wanting to keep the original plan.(我们完全理解你想保持原计划的想法。)

I don't understand to do this,这其实是错的。 I don't understand why you do this,或者I don't understand doing this。

2.4 understand +

  • I understand him to be a very careful person.(据我了解,他是个非常谨慎的人。)

  • I understand it that you will join us next week.(我的理解是你下周会加入我们。)

3.1 make oneself understood:

  • My German is not very good, but I can make myself understood in a restaurant.(我德语不太好,但在餐厅里还是能把意思表达清楚。)

很多人会误写成make you understood或make others understood。理论上make others understood也可以讲得通,但最标准、最常用的就是make myself understood / make himself understood,即主语和宾语指向同一个人的反身结构。

I want to make you understand me。 I want to make myself understood。

3.2 give sb to understand:

give sb to understand是一个很正式的书面表达,意思是“使某人相信/使某人了解到”,经常以被动形式be given to understand出现:

  • I was given to understand that the project had been approved.(据我了解,这个项目已经获批。)

I was given to understand that...,你就知道对方是在用很礼貌、很官方的口吻告诉你“有人跟我说过……”。

3.3 I understand

I understand how you feel或者I completely understand。

  • I understand you used to work for that company.(我听说你以前在那家公司上班。)

3.4 be understood to do:新闻英语里的“据信/据悉”

  • The company is understood to be planning a new product launch next month.(据悉,该公司正计划下月推出一款新产品。)
  • The two sides are understood to have reached a preliminary agreement.(据悉,双方已经达成了初步协议。)

4.1 understand

  • I understand the problem now.(正确)
  • I'm understanding the problem now.(错误/非常不自然)

  • I have come to understand how important this is.(我逐渐明白了这有多重要。)

I'm understanding more and more这种说法,那是口语在表达“正在一步步理解”的动态过程,属于一种语用上的灵活拓展,传统语法书一般不推荐。

4.2 unavoidably

The question is understood by me。

  • This remark could be understood as a criticism.(这句话可以被理解为一种批评。)

第二类是前面说过的be understood to do,表“据信”:

  • He is understood to be in his early forties.(据了解,他四十出头。)

  • Now I have understood the difference between these two words.(现在我已经明白了这两个词的区别。)

Now I understand the difference或Now I get the difference,因为“现在明白”这个状态用一般现在时最直接。

  • After he explained it twice, I understood what he meant.(他解释了两遍之后,我才明白他的意思。)

  • Got it?(懂了吗?)
  • Do you see what I mean?(你明白我的意思吗?)
  • Are we on the same page?(我们理解一致吗?)
  • Does that make sense?(这说得通吗?/你理解了吗?)

  • easy to understand / difficult to understand:非常简单/难以理解。例如The instructions are easy to understand.
  • understand each other / understand one another:互相理解。例如We have known each other for years, and we understand each other well.
I fully understand your concern.
  • begin to understand / come to understand:开始理解。例如I began to understand the value of patience after becoming a parent.

First I objected to the new rule, but over time I came to understand its purpose.

  • We understand your concern about the timeline.(我们理解您对时间线的担忧。)
  • As far as I understand, the deadline has been extended.(据我理解,截止日期已经推迟了。)
  • It is understood that all participants must register in advance.(按惯例/约定,所有参与者必须提前注册。)

最后这个It is understood that... It is understood that the prices quoted are subject to change,意为“报价如有变动,以最终确认为准”。这种表达在合同和商务邮件中特别常见,比People all know that...

  • have a good understanding of sth:对某事物有很好的理解
  • reach / come to an understanding:达成共识、达成谅解
  • on the understanding that...:在……

  • The two parties have reached an understanding on the basic framework.(双方在基本框架上已达成共识。)
  • He agreed to lend me the car on the understanding that I would return it by Friday.(他同意把车借给我,条件是我周五前还回来。)

on the understanding that... I accepted the offer on the understanding that the salary would be reviewed after six months,比直白的I accepted because...

第一个是“你会说英语吗”说成Can you understand English? Yes, I understand English, but I can't speak it。正确提问是Do you speak English?

第二个是understand about English。很多学习者受know about的影响,在understand后面也加about。 I know a lot about computers。 What do you understand by the project?或What's your understanding of the project?而不是What do you understand about the project?

第三个是make me understood。

  • I was in Japan, and I managed to make myself understood with a few simple phrases.
  • Even though his English is limited, he can always make himself understood in meetings.
  • The essay is well written, but the author fails to make himself understood in the conclusion.

I don't make others understand me,而是make myself understood。

问“你会说英语吗”时用Can you understand English?应该说Do you speak English? understand表“听懂”,speak表“会说”
understand后面接to do不推荐。
表“逐渐理解”可用come to understand
被动只用于be understood as和be understood to do
I understand / Now I understand即可,完成时多表“从过去持续到现在”
make someone understood用make oneself understood,主语和反身代词对应
I understand that...

最后两行尤其关键:I understand that...

每学一个动词搭配,就紧接着想想它的名词形式该怎么用:学了understand your concern,顺手记一下your understanding of the situation;学了understand why,顺手记一下the reason is beyond my understanding。
